Reading Bonus Terms Before You Opt In
Two casinos can advertise the same bonus and deliver very different value - the gap is in the terms. Wagering, game weighting, max bet and expiry, explained with a worked example you can reuse.
Two casinos can advertise what looks like the same bonus and deliver wildly different value. The difference is buried in three or four lines of terms that most players skip. Here is how to read them before you opt in – with a worked example you can reuse.
The four terms that decide a bonus
- Wagering requirement. The multiple you must bet before withdrawing, shown as something like 35x or 40x. Check whether it applies to the bonus only or to deposit plus bonus – the latter roughly doubles the work.
- Game weighting. Not every game clears wagering equally. Slots usually count 100 percent; table games and live dealer often count far less, or nothing at all. Play the wrong game and your progress barely moves.
- Max bet. While a bonus is active there is normally a cap on your per-spin or per-hand bet. Exceed it, even once, and many operators will void the resulting winnings.
- Expiry. Bonuses and the winnings from them expire. Miss the window and the balance simply disappears.
A worked example
Take a bonus of 100 units at 40x wagering on the bonus. That is 100 multiplied by 40 – 4,000 units of turnover before you can withdraw. If the requirement instead applied to deposit plus bonus, the figure would climb higher again. Now layer in game weighting: clear it on slots that count 100 percent and every unit of turnover counts in full; drift onto a table game weighted at 10 percent and you would need roughly ten times the turnover to make the same progress. The headline number told you almost none of that – the terms did.
Do the math before, not after
The reason to read the terms first is that the expensive surprises are all knowable in advance: a voided win from an over-limit bet, a wagering requirement you cannot realistically clear, a favourite game that never counts toward it. None of these are hidden – they are just unread. Our wagering calculator does the arithmetic for you, and our bonuses-explained guide walks through each term in plainer language.
A quick pre-opt-in checklist
- Is the wagering on the bonus only, or on deposit plus bonus?
- What is the max bet while the bonus is live?
- Which games count toward wagering, and for how much?
- When does the bonus – and its winnings – expire?
- Is there a max cashout on what you can withdraw?
If you cannot answer all five from the published terms, treat that opacity as its own red flag – and keep play within limits you set in advance, with our responsible-gaming hub a click away.
